Jennifer Shotwell, human resources recruiter at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, is always on the lookout for qualified entry-level employees with one important, yet sometimes hard to find, quality: a great attitude.
In 2002, Jennifer began working with Seattle Jobs Initiative. In an effort to cultivate great candidates for job openings at Fred Hutchinson, she began hosting interns in the organization’s human resources department. She recognized a great opportunity to get help around the office while working closely with potential employees, so that later, she’s able to recommend them with confidence. In the last three years, Jennifer has hired 4 graduates from Seattle Jobs Initiative.
She, like many HR professionals, has encountered difficulties in finding people who are motivated to do the sometimes tedious entry-level work. Since working with SJI, she has found a skilled pool of applicants who have motivation to perform well in their jobs.
“I like to hire entry level workers who have attitudes that reflect the Fred Hutchinson values of respect and excellence so they can stay here and grow into a career with us,” said Jennifer.
Seattle Jobs Initiative also provides Jennifer with an avenue to be involved in the Seattle community. An active member of SJI’s Employer Advisory Board, Jennifer also tries not to miss a graduation. She has even been a speaker at graduation and at SJI classes.
But her reasons for working with SJI go beyond professional.
“From a personal standpoint, I really enjoy mentoring people, and helping them grow as professionals,” said Jennifer. “It’s really fulfilling to be able to help people achieve personal success.”
