Shuttle Express recently exemplified Seattle Jobs Initiative’s idea of a model employer, by working hard to find a good employee a well-suited and desirable job. Rick Muenchow, a graduate of SJI’s Office Occupations training, began interning in an administrative/receptionist role with the company in the spring of 2004.

“Rick had a great attitude, “said John Angle, Shuttle Express’ human resource manager. “He worked hard, and he was really willing to learn. Everybody really liked him.”

Shuttle Express knew that they had found a great employee in Rick, but when the internship period was up, the company didn’t have an immediate position available for him. But the company didn’t give up. They put Rick through a one-week Shuttle Express driving course so that he could have a steady paycheck while they waited for a more appropriate position to come available. Soon after, they found a temporary position for Rick as guest service representative, and a fill-in position for the company receptionist during lunches, breaks and vacations. Everyone enjoyed Rick’s professional and friendly manner.

In the end, Shuttle Express’ tenacity in finding Rick work – along with Rick’s willingness to fill different roles – paid off for both Rick and the company. Within 6 months, the company experienced growth and needed another part-time scheduler. At the same time, John Angle was in need of an assistant. They combined the two positions, and Rick is now spending half his time in each role.

"Shuttle Express should be recognized for being an excellent employer,” said Rick. “They’ve taught me a lot and they definitely deserve a lot of credit, and they have a lot of patience.”

Rick has now joined the ranks of other SJI graduates receiving full medical benefits, paid vacation, and eligibility for a 401(k), while Shuttle Express is thrilled to have such a dedicated employee on staff.
